Like....holy fuck, who does that? I live in a small town and you never really hear about stuff like that happening here.

I've been up for most of the morning too, but I didn't hear a thing beyond maybe a small noise that I chalked up to being my cat an hour or so ago.

I'm a bit frazzled because it's something that really never happens around here.

Well, nothing has come up from the police yet. It's seeming fairly unlikely that we'll get it back, and there are several tools that my dad had for work in there that are likely gone, which he estimates total around $700 and likely won't be replaced by insurance.

I keep thinking back and the only thing that I can think of in terms of seeming suspicious was around 7:30PM last night when I heard a noise around my garage and went to investigate, but didn't see anything. It's possible someone was scouting us out at that point?

Evidently so. He just leaves them in the cupholder, apparently. Our town is small enough that it's very rare for anything like that to happen, especially when getting to the truck to even find out takes going a bit off the road and onto our driveway to even try.

He definitely shouldn't have left them there, but it's pretty shocking for something like that to even happen. Crime in general is fairly rare here.

Aren't dere traffic cams dat da cops can use to track

Not terribly likely. Our town is really small, and I believe there are only a few traffic cams in the whole town. If the thief is smart at all, I kinda doubt they'd drive by any of those since they're really easy to avoid.

...wow. That's insane but oddly enough NOT the first time I've ever heard of this.

I had a friend/coworker who had his wife's car stolen from THEIR driveway about 4 years ago too.

So it does happen, believe it or not. It's just so rare and crazy when it does. Sorry dude.

We've been thinking along those lines, but no one should have known about the keys. He doesn't drive the truck too too often and is sure he didn't mention it to anyone, unless they really looked into the truck when no one was looking.

And yeah, I don't think they'll find it intact at this point. I agree that it's likely been stripped down already in all likelihood.

It appears that whatever happened was a bigger deal than I had thought. Four people in the area had cars stolen last night, and several people had items stolen from cars, including a computer from someone down the street.

My dad was thinking that it was a random occurrence, but it's seeming like a bit more than that. I can't see just random teenagers or something doing all of that.

I'm not thinking so after hearing from the neighbors, given that other cars were stolen and various items were robbed from others. It seems that in some capacity, a group was searching cars in the area, but it's tough to say how organized they were.

Blows my mind that something like that would happen in my sleepy town, though.

If that were true, then the thief must know that too in order to avoid them. So either they are from there or they "visited" to look around the place and scout the cameras

When i was a teenager kids i knew would walk around at night and just pull door handles looking for one that was open. They they would look for anything valuable. Couple times they found keys and took the cars for joy rides. Crimes of opportunity really

Ended up getting caught eventually.

A fifth incident from the same night has come to light, and this one was at least somewhat caught on camera. Seems it was a group of four adult men, so the teenager theory seems to have gone out the window.

That car was actually found somehow, too, but it was stripped down and the valuables were stolen, as expected. I'd be stunned if my dad's truck wasn't in the same situation, but hopefully the perpetrators can be caught at the very least.

Well, they found the truck, around 30 miles from here, and wrecked, of course. Surprisingly a lot of his stuff was still in the thing, and I'd imagine that having the remains will help with the insurance claim. My parents haven't seen the damage yet but it's evidently pretty bad, which isn't surprising in the least.

do you have a pill/heroin/meth problem in your area? talk to your local junkies and you'll find out pretty quick, it was probably a worthless thieving junky that stole it. Just put up a $30 cash reward for information and they'll come running to you so they can get a stamp bag.

I'm not joking, i used to be an addict (although i never stole shit because fuck that and fuck using it as an excuse to be a scumbag) so i know how these people operate. half of them would sell out their own mother for some dope. i bought this laptop off a pill head who just got it for christmas from his grandpa 3 days beforehand, and i only gave the dude $90 for it lol.

i've never had a problem with car insurance and i've filed a lot of sketchy claims. when i was 17 i wrecked on a dirt road while drinking, when i came home my stepdad beat the living fuck out of me then rubbed a deer hide on the busted headlight and filed a claim saying i hit a deer and they didn't even question it. the black eyes really helped sell the story too lol.

Note: i don't even drink anymore let alone drink and drive. haven't done it for over a decade. i still remember that fear lol.

The laws are screwed up here, that 'theft' is rarely punished, but 'possession of stolen property' is. Guess what the punishment is for that? 6 months and a $3000 fine. We have so many thefts, its unbelievable.

Well, the thieves may have just screwed up. The truck was predictably a disaster with the whole front caved in, and the tools were stolen after all, but there was a strip of pictures left in there of a woman and a child, that may have been related to one of the perpetrators. We're trying to identify the woman in particular to see if we can figure out who did it.

They also left a bunch of snacks behind and spilled soda everywhere on the inside, so we think they left in a hurry, possibly after wrecking the thing given the state of it.

There are at least two of the assholes involved with the thing. I'd hope that this means they'll be caught at some point. Other reports have said that there were four involved so that may not be all of them, but it's a start.
