I used Sonic and Tails for Mania because they were the default option on the character select screen. I believe I made a mistake with that because I don't think you can access the true final Zone with Sonic and Tails. I believe you can only be just Sonic (as well as Knuckles and Knuckles). I didn't manage to collect all the Emeralds anyway, but I assume even if I had, I still would have got locked out.
Tails did get in some nice hits on bosses here and there. And his flying helped a little bit in some areas. But he also caused the final boss to bug out, forcing me to restart. You know whats weird, as a kid I would play as sonic alone.
