Apparently this is creating debate in certain corners of the internet...

My solution is...

I was taught that everything in parentheses must be calculated first. Then after that, all multiplication. Division is calculated last. Therefore, based on all my old math lessons, the answer is ONE.

Multiplication and division are done at the same time, from left to right. It's 9.

9

If you would have wrote it like this

6
_______
2(1+2)

then the answer would be 1

This shit again?

I think it's:

- Calculate what's in the brackets
- Multiplication and division in order from left to right

So 9?

If you're being smug and obtuse, it's 9

If you're a decent human being who understands kerning, 1.

You know what's a REALLY funny thing?

The place where I found this question, people were posting screenshots of their graphing calculators after punching in this formula. It will be exactly like you see in the first post...and depending on what kind of calculator you used, it either came out as 1 or 9.

So there might not even BE a correct answer to this!

It's the blue/gold dress thing all over again.

that said, I contend that 1*2*3 / 1*2*3 is a different equation than both 1*2*3*2*3 / 1 and 1*2*3/1*2*3 (although the latter two give the same result, it gets funkier when you throw in addition/subtraction on whether you divide everything by the denominator or merely a single term)

The answer is no math guru is going to accept mixed operational symbology and ambiguous math problems and will tell you to rewrite it to be clear in your intentions.
