Do you think academics are arrogant and self-absorbed?

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/education-view-from-here-academics-are-despised-as-time-wasting-over-holidayed-arrogant-gits-1181246.html

Academics are despised as time-wasting, over-holidayed, arrogant gits

But let's try for a moment to defend that object of so many people's loathing, the QAA. Why is it there? To find the answer, we have to face up to the unpalatable truth: it is there to mediate between the universities and the baying hounds of the Treasury on the one hand and the hostile public on the other. For make no mistake, universities have few friends in the world outside their walls. Academics are despised as time-wasting, over-holidayed, arrogant gits, only one stage better than the loathsome long-haired, drunken, over-holidayed students they supervise.

I think that they are just as arrogant as the ordinary public.

In my day to day life, I see more arrogant undergraduates than I do academics.

Wow what I would give to be the fly on the wall seeing some professor criticize you so bad that you develop a personal vengeance against professors and the educational system in general. In their defense though, judging by your posting style you don't appear to be teachable.

My professors in college gave me the impression that most university academics are indeed ridiculously pompous

One professor started the class with "my name is DOCTOR so and so. Not MISS so and so. DOCTOR. Not teacher, not Margaret. Doc.Tor. So. And. So. I didn't put in those years of hard work to not be called DOCTOR"

What a self absorbed bitch she was. I hated her.

That definitely exists on the right - what I can only describe as a hatred of higher education lately.

Well to be fair higher education has a lot of problems these days, and it needs to be criticized in order to improve.

Surely someone who claims to be intellectual and academic would understand the value of constructive criticism.

How many of you have actually met professors outside of a classroom setting (as in, they weren't your professor?)

Most professors are pretty chill people. They are mostly nerds passionate about the subject they teach, but they're still just nerds.

Those pompous, self-loving prudes you see in those old college movies are a stereotype. In fact, you'll notice that most professors with phd's don't even care about being called "Dr.", and don't ever really bring it up outside a context where it's relevant.

The only people that I see emphasize the "Dr." in their names are people with "honorary" doctorates, people who got their doctorates in diploma mills, or legitimate doctors that have a reason to use the prefix.

But most professors don't pretend they know more than the general public. Sure, they will know more about something (i.e. their specific field of study) than your average person, but not everything. In fact, some of the smartest, most well-known experts in fields that I've talked to tend to be the most humble, and the most willing to say they still really know nothing about the topic of interest, which continually drives their research to learn more.

Faculty and university administrators criticize higher education all the time. It's just that there's really not much one person can do about it. To restructure higher education would require a large enough group of people working together to change things up. Administrators, faculty, legislators, and even the for-profit companies that employ graduates. Unless everyone is willing to play ball, no one is really going to change anything.

Yeah in my experience most professors aren't that bad, they are usually like you said.

The problem is how professors aren't the kind of people you see going around claiming to be academics and intellectuals.

No doubt there are a shit load of problems with it.
For example, someone like Ben Shaprio or Milo speaking should "never" result in what has happened in the past, pure lunacy which definitely deserves all the criticism it receives.

Sounds like a very cherry picked example derived from personal biases and agendas.

Personal limitations hold no limits on other interpretations. When you ask people a question, it is no longer all about what you think, otherwise you should have been dictating.

What are you, dense?
I made it pretty clear in the previous posts that there is indeed a problem with it in some regards.
However, you got all offended when I said that the right is very anti-higher education (also in some regards, a literal #notall).

Emotional responses are often derived from hurt egos.
