They are mostly nerds passionate about the subject they teach, but they're still just nerds. Those pompous, self-loving prudes you see in those old college movies are a stereotype. In fact, you'll notice that most professors with phd's don't even care about being called "Dr.", and don't ever really bring it up outside a context where it's relevant. The only people that I see emphasize the "Dr." in their names are people with "honorary" doctorates, people who got their doctorates in diploma mills, or legitimate doctors that have a reason to use the prefix. But most professors don't pretend they know more than the general public. Sure, they will know more about something (i.e. their specific field of study) than your average person, but not everything. In fact, some of the smartest, most well-known experts in fields that I've talked to tend to be the most humble, and the most willing to say they still really know nothing about the topic of interest, which continually drives their research to learn more. --- Congratulations! It's just that there's really not much one person can do about it. To restructure higher education would require a large enough group of people working together to change things up.
