it's the passive skill tree

depending on your starting class you start at one of 7 different places https://vgy.me/pEDMTk.png

and then every level up (as well as some quest rewards) you get a single passive skill point which you can use to just kinda build your passive tree however you feel like. nodes are generally grouped into smallish clusters of related effects but you still need to plan a lot about where exactly you want to go and how you want to get there.

The things around the side are smaller trees for subclasses, you don't get very many points for them but each point has significant (sometimes build-altering) effects compared to the main skill tree
