"Clearly, I'm not asking people to vote for me simply because I'm a woman. I'm asking people to vote for me on the merits," Clinton said.

Then she directly addressed gender, adding: "I think one of the merits is I am a woman.

Trump isn't sexist. He'll insult or call out anyone who crosses him. Liberals had no issues with personal attacks against Cruz, Rubio or a shit ton of other men. Liberals who are upset that he doesn't treat women with kid gloves are the true sexists, not Trump. Trump respects them enough to insult them and knows that they can handle it; he treats them as equals with men.

Sexism wasn't really that big of a part of Trump's campaign. It was mostly racism and xenophobia. Hillary's campaign was largely about her sex.

Hillary using her status as a woman as a campaign strategy isn't sexism, though. It's a fact that there's never been a woman president. It's a fact that women have been oppressed historically. It's a fact that not that long ago women couldn't even vote or become senators. It's significant then that she was a woman, and it would have been obtuse to ignore that.

All of these things have significant political merit and pointing them out or using them as a part of your strategy is not sexism.

It would have been sexism if her strategy was more like "don't vote for a man", or "he's a man, he doesn't know what he's talking about".

It is absolutely sexism. Whether you think it is a good or bad thing is another issue.

If you're going to use a very rigid sense of technical definition rather than the culturally relevant definition I'd say it's a redundant point.

Yes, she's making a distinction of herself based on sex. No, it's not a bad thing given the context and it's not anything like the kind of sexism we generally talk of that actively oppresses people based on gender.

Women have held positions of power for quite some time now, including being leaders of countries and CEOs.

The "shock" value of "wow, a woman!" wore off years ago. She's not accomplishing the unthinkable anymore.

It's still an untouched milestone in American politics. Like I said, you'd have to be acting deliberately obtuse to not recognise the significance of it.
