They love it and use the water to get to new places.

The rafts are just huge groups of fire ants on top of each other, if that wasn't clear.

Yeah, fire ants commonly form rafts like that in flooding conditions. It's pretty nuts. This picture is from Cuero, TX:

All of that rust color is fire ants. I'd be pretty terrified if I was near that since I'm allergic to fire ants and other insect bites/stings.
