This was actually intended in RBY. A coding error makes them not able to hit Psychic types at all. From Gen II onward, this was fixed. This is why so many people got confused at the episode where Ash fights Sabrina with a Haunter. Ghosts were supposed to be good against Psychic but the only Ghost Pokemon were also Poison type which made them super vulnerable.

It was physical based as well so mostly useless on the gastly line. Wasnt Lick the only ghost type move in RBY that didnt have static damage tied to yoyr level? Didnt Lick have like 20 base power and was physical despite the only ghost type being a special powerhouse?

You can catch Farfetch'd in Yellow, you didn't have to wait for GSC. And while it's a decent HM slave, it's completely outclassed by Mew, who you get earlier.
