The immediate problem of homelessness would make it difficult to hire a lawyer and be able to go through the motions to declade bankruptcy. Then your credit is completely shot + history of eviction would make securing rent at a new location an insurmountable challenge. Dude was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I'm not surprised he tried waiting it out.
