Boxing still can be like that in the higher weight classes. Comparing the likes of Tyson and Ali fighting to a Mayweather fight isn't really a fair comparison.

I remember people complaining that Mike Tyson was too hard in Punch Out but frankly I'd say he was just like that in the ring to the average boxer.

Even worse, right when you were about to win he'd bite your ear off.

All I know about Mike Tyson, is when he utterly wrecked my shit in Punch Out, back on NES.

Mike was truly feared during his reign. We hadn't seen his like much before and definitely after.

Why, I once watched "Gentleman" Jim Corbett fight an Eskimo fellow bare-knuckled for a hundred and thirteen rounds! Of course, back then, if a fight lasted less than fifty rounds, we demanded our nickel back!

The great thing is this isn't even hyperbole, 100+ round matches were totally a thing a hundred years ago (though I can't imagine a round back then was the same as it is now).

Boxing should go back to the ways of beating each other near death.

The losing opponent should be dead or completely unconscious.

The greatest number of rounds was 276 in 4 hr 30 min when Jack Jones beat Patsy Tunney in Cheshire in 1825. Before the Queensbery Rules were introduced in 1867 each round of a fight would last until someone was knocked down. At that point the fighters would go back to their corners and then the fight would start again. There was no time limit nor was there any limit to the number of rounds. Because of this many fights at this time would end in draws.

To be fair, if you look at the UFC from the 90's it was a lot more brutal too.

Shit changes.
