well the arguement I have been told is that they want all ages here to increase site traffic. and if the place is full of porn and swearing, it would drive away kids. I don't think many kids come here anyway though. at least not to the boards. all across the site, on every board, it seems like most posters are these days at least 20. the site's users have aged. kids might come to look at faqs but they don't click on the boards. kids use facebook to talk. message boards are outdated

Probably not much else. Communities can already be pretty badly disruptive just by career trolls who never or seldom get moderated and never seriously. I've seen that plenty of times myself.

The staff as they are now reminds me of Chief Wiggum in the Simpsons episode where Marge thinks Becky plans to kill her and steal her family. She goes to Wiggum who brushes her off, "The law is powerless to help you"

Marge later snaps and attacks Becky, and is then arrested promptly. "I thought you said the law was powerless to help?!" to which Wiggum replies, "Powerless to HELP you, not punish you"

Just like when they allowed swearing, of course day 1 it was like LOL FUCK SHIT BITCH but once the novelty wore off people only started swearing when they would normally swear.

I think the same would happen in this situation.

Kids these days don't ever use message forums, they probably don't even know what they are.

Most message forum users these days are in their 20's and 30's, they probably grew up during the golden age of web forums, the early 00's, and stick around out of habit, or they are very poorly adjusted people who need it for reassurance.

In any case, kids these days generally avoid message forums because they have grown up using social media outlets like twitter, facebook, youtube, and so on to discuss things of interest. When they go to a forum, they are usually greeted by a bunch of salty old assholes trying to give them shit for having a contrary opinion. They might get banned, or they quickly just go back to whatever they were doing before.

It's why gameFAQs has been experiencing a dying userbase, they have pissed off most of the people who would have been supporting them, burned those bridges down and now they have nobody else to turn to.

I mean it was fine in the early to mid '00s when we were kids ourselves, but do we really want to have a large new user base of kids on this site now?
