I'm following the coverage of Hurricane Harvey because I have family and friends in Texas that will be affected by this storm. Since Texas is right next to Mexico and has a lot of Spanish and bilingual speakers, The Weather Channel is broadcasting updates in both English and Spanish.

On various forms of media, there are people who complain that the Spanish updates aren't in English, and are commenting that people should only speak English in the United States. Not just a few, but thousands of people - and they see absolutely no problem with their 'reasoning.'

It's so embarrassing. Why do people have to be like this?

Its funny because having lived in 3 countries overseas (in 3 different continents) Americans almost NEVER learn the local language or language of the country they moved to. They expect everyone to speak english and make almost no attempt at getting better past basic conversation level dialect.

With google translate you can set the two languages you need translation for (like English and Japanese) and the app will translate spoken word for you both to text

TC, the answer to your question is that in the past people only had these stupid thoughts in their heads. Now because of the internet they can share them with the whole world. If you ever wished you could read another person's mind, now we kind of have the technology and most of us realize how stupid much of the world can be.

United States doesn't actually have any official language.

This storm is extremely dangerous.

It's moving so slowly that it is just a few miles north of where it was yesterday evening. Some areas of coastal Texas/Houston area have received 10+ inches of rain already and are expecting 18-24 inches more. TWC has reported that isolated areas can receive up to 50 inches of rain from this storm. That's more than a year's worth of rain in less than a week.

Houston is a very large city, and there are millions of people still there. As I type this, there is a Tornado Warning in the Houston area and it will be there within 6 minutes.

This storm is spreading into Louisiana. Most of my family is still down there and a hurricane is why I don't still live down there to begin with, so this is heart wrenching for me.
