i haven't played it myself but from gameplay i've seen, it's pretty shit on the original 3ds and only worth to play on the new 3ds. i really enjoyed it on the wii u, but when i learned that all the dlc wasn't playable on it i got bummed out and haven't played it since.

Yeah I need a really "nothing" kinda game to watch TV to. I'd play real Dynasty Warriors but then I couldn't watch something at the same time >_>

N3DS with the 3D off actually has the best performance possible, better then the Wii U version. Obviously it doesn't look as good, but I prefer better running games than better looking ones.

Also the game is fantastic.

How is the unit count/draw distance? Does it still feel like Dynasty Warriors?

Yeah, I compared the two when I first got the 3DS one because I want quite convinced. Enemy count is fine, if a tiny amount lower than the console version. It's been a while since I last played, but I don't recall draw distance being worse than most other Warriors titles.

I've played both Wii U and 3DS versions and the portable one is great. It's got some differences to compensate for lower enemy count and lack of co-op, but things like fairies are fun and Magic Fountain+ breaks most maps because eof how easy you can A-rank.

The characters are all pretty diverse in how they play and have good animations, the game is packed with references and throwback to source games, there's a good bit of representation with only really the Capcom ones being notably absent, and there's a lot of content with a good season pass pack. If it seems like I'm fanboying this game, I am because I really love it. I got a Wii U purely for this (ended up getting other games too of course) and didn't regret it at all with how much time my sister and I put into it.

Playing it now. It's pretty much up to my expectations... I don't think I'd play this 3DS version over real Dynasty Warriors, but for portable it's totally up to snuff. Does it have lots of weapon/character variety? Are the battles just as strategic?

Most characters are locked to one weapon. A few, mostly the main characters like the different Links, Ganondorf, Zelda, and so on have more than one weapon that completely changes how they play. For example, Link's sword set focuses on quicker attacks on fewer targets, while his horse set is about mobility and clearing things while moving, though it's less effective for dueling against enemy captains. If you want, I can post a full list of characters and their weapons, or if you'd rather find out on your own or would like to check the Wiki instead, you can go here: http://koei.wikia.com/wiki/Hyrule_Warriors
Note that Ganon and the Cucco are Wii U-exclusive characters tied to a certain game mode in the DLC.

Battles can vary. Some can have really different objectives like quiz maps. You enter a keep, are given a question like "Defeat the shield-wielder!" or "Defeat the foe who has a horse!" and defeat the correct target without killing the other. The hardest one is one where you're given like six keeps, all at really low health, then told to defend them from various enemies that spawn around the map every so often. That one requires the most target prioritization and factoring in distance between keeps and shortcuts between them. They can be frustrating, but they're also fun.

Also, you'll spend a lot of time grinding for materials to upgrade badges for characters. You'll probably burn out on the game before getting them all, even for just the characters you want, but the subreddit for this game has a list of materials spots for Wii U and 3DS, DLC and no DLC. It's also got write-ups on the characters and the best way to use their weapons for different situations.

So it's not just a straight rip of Dynasty Warriors, they've actually made it Zelda-fied. That's pretty cool.

It's a game with a lot of great fanservice for those who like the Zelda series. Unless someone absolutely despises the one-against-many type of gameplay, I would recommend it to fans to at least give it a shot.

If you just started, you won't have much available on the Adventure Mode map, but you get items from certain panels and use them to open rewards or paths to other panels on the map, which is modelled after the one from the first Legend of Zelda game, including the same kinds of secrets like which trees to burn or where you need a hookshot. Beating the first map unlocks more, and most of the adventure maps have some sort of gimmick. The Termina map, for instance, allows you to fight 72 battles before the moon crashes down, resetting the map, but you 1) only require C-rank to unlock all the panels you've beaten and 2) keep all items obtained and 3) any owl statues you've activated stay active so you can start from certain points of the map.

If you have a New 3DS it's fine. Not as good as the Wii U version, but still good enough I'd say. And the new maps and free dlc from the Wii U version add a lot of content.

Honestly I've always wanted to like Zelda but OoT and Majora's mask were too obtuse for me. I've played a bit of Twilight Princess and ALBW and enjoyed them though. I think I get the basic gist of the plot, characters and setting.

Ya, N3DS. It seems to run really well and the pop-in doesn't bother me although it's absolutely insane.

I've only played it on the Wii U. The core gameplay is addicting. It doesn't evolve much past the 10-hour mark, yet the game offers hundreds of hours of content (plus extensive DLC). It's the ultimate "filler" game. I spent around 200 hours with it (and didn't come close to finishing the DLC maps) before I grew tired of the formula and needed a break. Your mileage may vary.

It's a great value and a good time-sink, imo.

Just finished the tutorial. Good stuff so far. I suppose the on the fly character switching makes up for lack of weapons.
