The guy at the post office should have told you you had the wrong birth certificate. You should have another one .

Source same thing happened to me except I didn't have to pay all the fees when I brought the wrong one in

If they rejected it, it is the wrong one. They require an official birth certificate, yours is likely the hospitals "Certificate of Live Birth".

Hospitals do not issue birth certificates even if they say it on the form (could happen depend on your age, i think all current hospital issues certificates are marked as certificate of live birth to avoid the confusion).

that part varies on state. some will require copies of your ID with notorized letters and stuff like that, others you just need to give a verb sworn affidavit during the request. No state requires you to be there in person, they all have options for out of state, but if you call your states Vital Records office they will tell you exactly what you need to do.

An official birth certificate and be issued whenever. I didn't have a copy of my official birth certificate until I was 22.
My certificate of live birth from the hospital was not valid even though it was issued the day of my birth.

Correct. It's only valid for proving citizenship to get a Passport, on it's own if it was filed within one year of your birth.

you need a birth certificate from the county you were born in. not just a copy of it the one from the hospital.
