DPS

Is there an MMO that doesnt require the three-class system?

The Realm

Everyone can deal damage. The three options are simply melee, physical ranged, and magic. All are effective.

Tanking isn't a thing. Everyone who is in melee combat will be taking damage and none of them are the designated "tank". Tanks aren't necessary for most things as there are many other options in mysticism magic to summon decoys or freeze enemies in place.

Anyone can pick up healing magic, and unlike modern MMORPGs you won't have one person just constantly spamming heals as much as they can. Healing means you can't input an offensive command for that round of combat, which means enemies take longer to die, which means they'll just keep doing more damage anyway. Better to not be paranoid about having missing health and heal only when absolutely necessary

Too bad the official servers closed

Yeah Guild Wars 2 has no holy trinity, but from what some friends that play it religiously tell me, the game has so many issues, mostly balancing and other stupid shit.

D.C. Universe Online has the controller class added to the mix. It's a support type hero that is basically a Mana healer instead of a health healer.

City of Heroes had a controller role that was pretty much required in most of the higher level group missions. But its gone.

FFXI had crowd controllers too, I thought most games had that since most games have hordes of enemies.

It's amazing how in that game, unless you're one of the most geared damage dealers you will be either competing with a lot of people, or not be taken to raids at all, or you roll a support character and get brought into raids regardless of your gear because buffing and holding is such an important aspect that everyone needs it.

yeah that's one of the main problems for sure
the game itself is pretty fun but because there's only 2 main roles most people will be damage dealers, and supports are just so important in this game
my low effort gear buffer character was always accepted into raids immediately just because he was a buffer

My biggest issue with that game is the god damn fatigue bar and how it limits your play time the higher you get...

eh fatigue is only really an issue during the leveling, especially early on where you go through stuff really fast
later on it takes much longer to actually go through your entire fatigue bar, especially with the free fatigue potions that neople gives

Maplestory has become SoloStory and the concept of party member roles is meaningless. The goal is to see how fast you can solo the new bosses they add every other week.

The game may not be strictly structured around the "trinity" so to speak, but those roles absolutely exist within the game, if a bit atypically compared to other MMOs.

You're never going to be in a situation we're you're shouting for an hour to get a tank/healer for your levelling dungeon group though.

EQ2 follows it but there's like 6 different healers, 2 in plate armor, 2 in chain, 2 in leather, and each of those two are different, for the 2 plate one does buffs, the other does debuffs.

DPS you have ranged DPS, melee dps, buffer/medium melee dps and so on.

Tanks- Tanks that specialize in AOE and buffing or tanks that specialize in direct damage with no AOE etc.

While it follows the rules there is so many choices for those roles that all play differently.

Example: Bard class in EQ2 breaks into a Troubador (good side) and Dirge (evil side)- the differences are explained by someone else below:

Main difference between the two is that Troubadours give buffs to stats that are important to spellcasters and Dirges give buffs to stats that are important to melee. I don't have a Troubador and I have a Dirge that I don't play very often. Both are scouts that can dual-wield. Neither one can use crafted poisons like predators or rogues. Both are melee classes that also cast a few spells, with dirges having a slight advantage on the melee side and troubadors do more spell damage. Dirges can rez and cure rez sickness. Troubadors can mez and stun. I'm sure you'd have fun with either one, and both are useful to groups.

As others have mentioned, Guild Wars 1 and 2 were explicitly designed around avoiding the holy trinity as classes.

If you're willing to go old school, Ultima Online avoids this issue entirely by having everything be based on skill usage and a skill points cap.

It does have a holy trinity but outside of raids it doesn't matter. You can do all fractals and world events with any composition. Raids are an extremely small part of the game.

No it hasn't...before big bang party quests were the major way to level and highly more popular than training. Also bosses like zakum took a party to take down maybe a few elite people could solo and it was difficult.

Compare back then reputable guilds arranged zakum runs for weak people to buy zakum helmets by joining a zakum run to now where the game is all about wearing drop rate gear and going to crimson root abyss by yourself so you get all the drops.

I don't mind the holy trinity, what I mind is when classes are locked into one or the other. I would prefer classes to be able to spec into different roles instead of just being locked into one or the other.

And also, if I have to spec so heavily into one role that I'm locked out of hybrid specs, it also gets boring.
