I totally get not bankrupting or spending well beyond your means for a wedding, but there's nothing wrong with spending money on a wedding (that should just be once) as a lifetime memory with friends and family.

Have you ever seen a trend of thinking on Reddit and went, "Yeah that makes sense"?

because the people that write posts like this are most likely college students with very little experience regarding weddings and dont really get the purpose of them or the meaning of ceremony, so they just view weddings/engagements/etc the same way you'd view any other purchase ("why would you spend $1,000 on this PC when you can build your own for $400 cheaper?!" etc).

I don't fault someone for not spending a lot on a wedding, but if you expect people to drive/fly/etc. long distances in order to be with you, stuff like not having a meal seems rude.

I agree that American wedding culture is pretty dumb.
As that guy on reddit said, most of you people are already in debt when you get married.

For example, where I'm from, weddings usually have like 300-600 guests and every one of them gifts anywhere from 100$ to 500$ so the newly wed couple can have a good start.

I wonder if you could crowd fund a wedding with people's gifts if you got them before hand and set it up right

It'd be stupid but interesting

Yea, people here figured out that buying gifts results in wasted money most of the time.
Only best man and maid of honor buy gifts and couple's parents.

Like this it's basically money circling around.
Everyone's parents are like "we gotta invite them because we gave X money at their wedding".

What's wrong with thinking that an extravagant party is a waste of money?

If her family is rich and pays for it then w/e but otherwise there's no reason to spend much at all.

I mean, companies will literally charge you more if they know it's for a wedding. You could just say "family event" and there's way less tagged onto it than specifically "wedding".

There's nothing wrong with throwing an extravagant party but there ARE cheaper ways to achieve the same thing, and honestly the prices are kind of ridiculous.

Wedding costs are only high because people are too lazy to actually do research. My fiance and I are maximum thrifty and it looks like we're gonna be able to do a full-on reception with food and drinks and everything you expect, in a nice venue, for around $5000-$6000. But that's because we're not just going with the generic-ass wedding packages you get when you go to venues and tell them "We want a wedding package."

Meanwhile most our friends and family spent $20,000 - $30,000 because, again, they just went to country clubs and said "What are your packages like?" With that shit, you end up with ridiculous prices like $130 per person, and that adds up FAST. Not to mention they go to businesses that explicitly label themselves as wedding specialists. Once you throw the word "wedding" onto something, the price skyrockets.

What industry are you glad that Millennials are killing?

Yes, I'm aware that the wedding industry is growing, etc etc. Millennials are paradoxically both less consumerist and more interested in "experiences", and I think for a lot of them, a big wedding represents an "experience" worth paying for.

My family all gave cash at our wedding (which I knew they would do). Paid for half our wedding.

My rock is expensive af though. I'm ok with that because it's pretty and sparkly and I hope to always wear it :)
