Or actually, I guess smaller than your average 8th grader (google says the average is 5'4")

I just don't get it. What's the point of watching small weak dudes fight other small weak dudes?

I always thought the appeal of sports was about watching people who are the best at what they do.

They should make some of these small guys fight real MMA fighters.

I would pay to see someone who is 5 feet tall fight a heavy weight.
(the smaller guy would be allowed to wear padding for safety)

Yeah, but the reason why I watch the nba over pick up games at the park is because the NBA players are the best in the world.

The MMA is like people paying money to watch people play basketball at the park. I guess that's what so odd about it to me. The fact that they even have weight classes is odd.

Imagine if the NBA had weight/height classes, it's like what the fuck is the point? Anyone who plays basketball in a league with restrictions on capability is objectively not great at basketball.

I know this isn't exclusive to MMA, I just don't understand why it still exists and why people don't just prioritize the league that doesn't ban fighters because they are too good, too big or too strong.

Is it boring to see the best fighters go at it? is that why?

Why not have 120 pound football leagues, 120 pound baseball leagues, 120 pound hockey leagues, 120 pound basketball leagues etc.

Like why did none of these sports get minor leagues based on smaller weights, but combat sports did and why are they equally valued by the fans?

I've heard people say that these small boxers and mma guys are actually really good, and it's like... well if they are, then why don't they take on a guy who is average height? lmao

They wear way more protection, and don't actually punch and kick each other until one team submits.

The spectacle of two massive, strong dudes is way more entertaining than lightweight stuff.

I don't know why the boxing spotlight has moved away from that kind of stuff since the Tyson days.

Japan does this all the time. To quote an old joke, "almost every card has something gigantic fighting something that should be making toys for santa."

It hilarious to watch a 500 pound man punch straight down at midgets. That being said, smaller MMA fighters aren't bad. I mean, Gracie wasn't huge and he is the godfather of MMA, so...

Has a tiny dude ever won one of these fights?
Against a regular MMA fighter, not like some extreme thing.
I saw a fight where it was a sumo vs an average sized MMA fighter and obviously a Sumo is just way too fat fight seriously. They can barely move and get extremely tired quick.

Or at least this guy did. It was pretty cool to watch nonetheless.

Something changed post Tyson. I'm not sure if it was a rule change or just a shift in general style, but heavyweight boxing has become a lot slower. More rest holds, less stamina, and kind of boring. It's sad, really. Heavyweight boxing was amazing when I was younger, and now I can barely name any boxers.

Demetrious Johnson is quite possibly the most skilled fighter in the entire UFC roster, especially now that Jon Jones reclaimed the title of Greatest Of All Time Fuckups.

It's true that Johnson is smaller than the average male, but I would bet money on him beating any regular guy on the street, up to around 210 lbs. He is a professional. He beats people up for a living, and there are very few people near his level of expertise.

Yeah, sometimes. Granted, most wins are just by decision because the big guy got tired and the small guy just dodged and punched fast. Though, I've seen a couple KOs.

Once, the little guy jumped up, hit the huge dude under the chin, and it activated sleep mode while the big guy was standing straight up. One thing about MMA, it really showcases the myriad ways the human body can shit itself.

Has he ever fought a guy over 130 pounds?

Isaiah Thomas is a great basketball player in spite of his height. He's not good for his height, he's good overall. And the only reason we know this is because he plays in a league that doesn't have a height restriction and he plays with all the other guys.

I feel like it's clear to me this dude is not a great fighter in spite of his size, but rather, just a great fighter for his size (and a bad fighter overall)

I mean, if this isn't the case, then why doesn't he just challenge heavier mma dudes. It's not like something like that is completely unheard of.

It's just weird that a fighter would refuse to fight anyone who isn't less than 130 pounds, idk. That's really really small

insanely good fighter =/= competitive in other divisions.

The womens' top marathon runners would shit on 90+% of men, but don't compete with men because they aren't better than the top 1% of men, and so are not competitive at that level. You can be phenomenal at something, and yet not be elite in another division.

Serena Williams is/was a phenomenal tennis player, whether or not she can compete with the worlds' best men does not diminish her ability

I think this is more a case of women's soccer, where the best womens teams in the world lose to highschool soccer teams.

I really doubt a man who weighs 120 pounds and is 5 feet tall could beat up 99% of men.

Champions vs Champions

It would be a terrible idea for high level MMA fighers to go far above their class. If mouse fought a heavy or super heavy weight, he'd have almost no chance just due to arm and leg length. Too much to lose,

In Japan, those fights tend to be either biggest fighter versus smallest fighter they can find, sumo wrestlers failing to be able to anything but that, or tune up fights where a veteran comes back after an injury and gets back in the groove with a fighter that can't really hurt him.

Top level guys rarely fight exhibitions, because there isnt much to gain, a lot to loss, ive heard that it counts against your three loss your fired rules in The UFC
