do the show writers really suck compared to George RR Martin? Is he involved at all once they pass the books? Even as a councilor or providing direction? Just started s3 btw. I might want to just stop watching once they catch up to the books if the show goes downhill. I don't want to watch fanfiction.

Pretty much any time they deviate much from them. S3 was great. S4 was good. S5 was shit and it's all downhill from there

He told them the broadstrokes of what happens incase he cant finish the books. But yeah, the show slowly starts going downhill after season 3. Season 5 was the worst, but every season has at least some good parts.

It took a dip at season five. In it's defense, AFFC and ADWD are a step down from the first three books anyway and there's no way they could have adapted a book a season once they got to those two. Would have ruined the show. Show is worse once they condensed those two and moved on but it's not ruined.

It's not fan fiction, at this point it IS the continuation/eventual end of ASOIAF. GRRM will never finish the books. Make peace with it.

nah. some people just hate when things deviate from the story they knew. it's understandable, but in most cases it's more about feelings than logic.

This. If you nitpick anything from everything, then you won't enjoy it though. If you enjoy the story, you'll still enjoy the later seasons. Even people complaining are still watching every week.

It's not so much that it's bad, it's just that D&D are in a bit over their heads at this point. They signed up to adapt GRRM's series, not write it for him.

God damn the emmys are a fucking joke. I forgot about that one too.

She gets a nomination, but Michael McKean (Better Call Saul) and Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) get completely ignored for their roles. Fuck the emmys.

The studios were given RR's original outline as part of the deal to get the show made. If it's declined in quality, it's because much like the books RR can't finish what he started. Only now he can claim the movie "ruined" his ending with whatever fake claims he wants, and then either re-write it by keeping what people liked and changing what they didn't or, more likely, never finish it. He gets to walk away with all of the praise and none of the criticism even though they're working from his notes.

I mean, the show will get an ending. And when most people got into the books they assumed there'd be an ending. Some still cling to that hope, true.

i will agree that Gillen is underrated BUT the writers have completely ran out of ideas for his character (same with Tyrion) and he's become so one dimensional

I put most of the blame on GRRM. D&D signed up to adapt a series, not finish it for the old fattie. Hes had plenty of time to get Winds and Spring out and instead is doing fucking nothing for all I know. Had GRRM not been a fat lazy fuck and finished the books D&D wouldnt have to pull shit from their collective ass to finish it for him.

Also this. I got in late, at the release of ADWD. That was still 2012. Some people have been following since the 90's...

I hear people all the time say it's overrated and blah blah and it might be true but I'll be honest I haven't read another book series like it.

On topic:

I don't like a lot of changes or omissions but like others have said it's still one of the best shows on television by a long shot and it's very entertaining for what it is. I'm glad they deviated on the slight chance we really do get the last two books.

The show butchered Jamie though. So fucking hard.

Everyone's got their own opinion on this...

I'd say that the show gets better and better over the course of seasons 1 through 4. Seasons 5 and 6 take a dip, mirroring the lull in the source material. Season 7-- now 100% ahead of the books-- is moving at breakneck speed.

The show has made some smart changes and some not-so-successful changes. The most noticeable consequence of the show being ahead of the books, imo, is that Tyrion's dialogue (i.e. the voice and unfiltered wit of GRRM himself) has suffered immensely. The recently-aired S7E6 had fantastic dialogue all around though, so it's not like D&D are totally blowing it.

I think that the budget is the biggest problem right now. The story demands motion picture quality at this point and HBO is somehow delivering hours of it... but the show is also suffering under the reduced episode count this season. I can get over fast-travel, but we're also moving too fast for believable character development in some cases, now.

Over all though, season 7 represents a strong recovery from the somewhat sleepy two seasons that preceded it.
