Feels like statues of historical figures are dropping left and right the past few days. From Robert E. Lee to Christopher Columbus to even George Washington himself. Or at least people are starting to advocate that last one.

For good or ill, all these people played an important role in the foundation of America. For that reason I think that these statues should remain standing. Or at the very least remain intact. These people were just like any person you can find today. They've done good things and they've done bad things. But people are so fixated on the bad right now that they believe the statues should be completely destroyed and erased.

But the problem is that every historical figure has some sort of misdeed associated with them. No one was or ever will be perfect. Because of this, if you REALLY think it is improper for a statue of this person to be displayed in a park or something, I say don't destroy it. Move it instead to a museum where people can still learn from them, both the bad and the good in equal measure. Both are important to learn and remember and by destroying all symbols we risk forgetting everything and THAT can be even more disastrous that whatever negative influence you think leaving the statues intact will have.

But with people going down the hit list of historical figures to eliminate, I must ask this question to those who advocate and support this destruction. What statues SHOULDN'T be destroyed? Which ones do you WANT to remain standing where they are?

Is it a white guy?

Yes: Could be removed
No: Will not be removed regardless of any wrong doing by the individual

I don't give a fuck about statues. But, instead of destroying them, they should be moved to a museum.

People illegally destroying them are scum though.

Robert E Lee didn't even want statues of himself placed anywhere. If he's as honorable and wise as his supporters claim then why don't they listen to him?

A Hero yesterday is a villain today. Its just part of history and i thought it was understood. Good luck finding flawless people to make statues out of. And if were alright with tearing down statues that offend you then im fine if they tear down the new statues of whom ever.

Can we just start with getting rid of the Confederate monuments and go from there? =)

Then the question becomes, where does it stop?

How much history needs to be destroyed before people are satisfied?

The issue with Confederate statues is that the very thing they are memorialized for is the misdeed. Washington and Lincoln made mistakes. But we didn't put up statues of Lincoln scrapping habeus corpus. The Confederacy and its secession were about preserving slavery, and hundreds of thousands died because they fought to defend that barbaric institution. These villains were then made out to be noble warriors for a doomed cause as those sympathetic to them claimed power once more in the South.

How about we ask the question: was this monument constructed primarily to intimidate a racial minority? And then go from there.

The removal of monuments to the Confederacy is not the destruction of history any more than the establishment of them was the creation of history. Agendas marked the construction of them every bit as much as agendas mark the current debate. There's a reason why they don't have statues to Southern Unionists, or even Judah Benjamin, the Secretary of State and Jefferson Davis' right-hand man.

I was gonna say Mickey Mouse, but then his design was influenced by minstrel makeup. Maybe they're gonna take his statue down next.

Stick a statue like this in any major Southern city and then we can talk about the extent to which these things tell history
