It's one of those things that I hear being mentioned and see the title for all the time but I know nothing about it.
All I know about it is when people talk about it, they either really love it and think it's the best thing ever or really hate it and think it's cancer (or some other over-exaggeration). Never in between.

It's a really good game.

Some fans overhyped it as the greatest thing ever and got really aggressive with people online with people who said it was not the greatest thing ever (or heaven forbid "didn't like it")

this caused them to get pushed in the opposite extreme direction.

That's all.

It takes about 4 hours from start to finish unless you do both genocide/pacifist routes or screw up by locking yourself into neutral ending.

It's sort of the RPG equivalent of The Stanley Parable in that it's a game that plays you just as much as it is a game you play.

It's extremely clever. Most importantly, it subverts virtually every rule of game logic you can think of and ultimately forces you to either think way outside the box or basically get nowhere.

Reading guides truly spoils the game, though. The legit only way to play it is by discovering it on your own.

As an actual GAME, mechnically-speaking, it's kinda bland. The point is that it's basically one constantly changing puzzle from beginning to end. It's kinda like the first time you realize that Fez is much deeper than it ever lets on.

I just recommend playing it. It's a unique game, and I'm sure most of the vitriol towards it comes from the fanbase overhyping the game to death.

The long and short of it is that it's a pretty mediocre game but its subversive design is so incredibly unique that it's a must-play unless you simply don't give a shit about "games as art".

The less you know about it honestly the more likely you'd be to enjoy it if you played it yourself.

But basically, it's an indie turn-based RPG made by a single dude, that has a strong emphasis on characters/writing and music, with a pretty unusual battle system that is a lot more involving than turn-based RPGs typically are, and doesn't actually force you to kill anyone if you don't want to, and pays a lot of attention to how you play in general.

So...that's why it's successful. It does its own thing, has memorable music and characters presented with gameplay that is unusual. Unfortunately the internet has to just overblow everything and people act like it's just the greatest most amazing game of all time (it's not, at all) or the worst piece of crap ever devoid of merit (not even close to true). It's just an unusual RPG that clearly had a lot of heart and thought put into the making of it and has some neat ideas it puts to full use. If you get into its groove you'll enjoy your stay and if you don't then that's not surprising either.

Might be worth checking out at some point if you're interested in well made distinct games off the beaten path, especially if you can tear yourself away now from the toxic religious battle between fans and anti-fans that ravages the internet plains. >_>

All else I think should be said, is: don't expect the gameplay to necessarily be stagnant, when it comes to combat. The game isn't super long, and thanks to that it is able to kinda keep evolving, in a sense. But it won't be immediately obvious what is really meant by that.

I had what I think was a mini boss fight. I tried flirting with him but he wasn't into it. So I had to cheer him up a bunch and flirt with him again and now he's my friend.

It's considered an "SJW" game so it got a lot of hate for daring to include non-hetero characters and deconstructing a genre.

I don't think I've ever found a fanbase for a game that didn't irritate me if I exposed myself to them long enough. Maybe the Silent Hill fanbase?

Dunno. Depends on what the majority thought about Homecoming not letting you invert the right stick's up/down. Because that is a dealbreaker for me if they think that's acceptable.

It's a fun, creative game that this message board got extremely salty over because it won the Best Game Ever contest.

Perhaps the aggressive fanbase is a factor but we see this sorta attitude over a lot of critically acclaimed indie games so I think it's more used as an excuse to hate a game they have no interest in playing.
