Exactly what I'd expect from Spotify.

Metal for people who don't really listen to metal.

(Which isn't to say anything about metalheads who like those groups, but let's be realistic; people who don't listen to "that screamo music" still might give those groups a shot.)

Metal elitists still have no problem admitting that groove metal/metalcore is a legit subgenre of metal despite hating it. Mallcore is singled out because its influences are clearly more rooted in grunge than any type of metal.

A lot of times "real metal" has that cheesy guitar tuning, extended solos, songs about packs of wolves running under a moonlit night sky.

Slipknot doesn't really fit into that category very well. I'd say they're metalcore, imo.

I'm not really saying that they're just simply heavy metal, just that they're part of the metal umbrella of subgenres. Which I'm not a subgenre nerd so I'm not really able to get into the some major and some more subtle differences from subgenre to subgenre and tell you what exactly they fall under, but I feel like if you were to boil them down to a main branch of music such as rock/punk/metal/rap/country/etc. etc. etc. That they very clearly would most accurately fit in the metal branch of music. The tunings of their instruments, how they play them, the drumming, the vocals, etc. All of that seems easily identifiable as some sort of metal to me. And apparently the mainstream metal community agrees to some extent considering they've won a bunch of metal awards as a band and individual members, they've played metal festivals, metal publications generally talk about them when doing news and such, and I see albums like Iowa get listed fairly frequently in admittedly basic bitch versions of "best metal albums of the 2000's" lists along with the likes of SOAD's Toxicity but still.
I also agree with whoever said they're probably the most iconic metal band of our time, they're definitely nowhere near the best of our time but as far as relevancy, popularity, notoriety, sales, etc. I'm having trouble thinking of any other metal bands that have defined the last 15 or so years like they had.

Alternative rock

I think it would be a stretch to bunch them in to rock over metal, their style seems lean way more metal than rock. Compare their music to Stone Sour for example and it makes that contrast more apparent to me. Stone Sour is pretty much Slipknot lite and much more of an alt rock/hard rock sound. Slipknot definitely has some individual tracks that need into that territory but as a whole I think it would be really weird to consider them the same genre.

But again I'm not really a subgenre nerd or anything so I don't really know.
