I'm pretty sure the single people that are getting so defensive about this are exactly the types that are at risk. You can have a social circle while being single, but they are not going to be with you all the time, in your home. It is also going to be far less fixed than someone who has a family. It is not to say being single is bad, but it is more dangerous than having a family and a regular partner. If you aren't careful you'll find out why.

I'd argue that anyone in a happy relationship would outlive singles and anyone in an unhappy relationship. People can also feel lonely with friends or in groups or out in public. Love is a powerful thing, and when you have reciprocated love you can do amazing things.

That's a good point and some people may be fine with being single. Especially while under 40.

But there comes a time when pretty much everyone around you is married and has kids and are hanging out with couples who are married and have kids because their kids are friends. And then what? Be a tag along and hang out with married couples all the time? Or try to find single friends which will only get harder once your in your 40s, 50s, etc?

I have a feeling many people who are middle aged and single are probably pretty un-happy. But I could be wrong. I have no proof or study to back up my claims. But it doesn't sound too fun, to be honest.

It is probably offset by having a family in the first place. There is a lifespan benefit to having people always there, in your life and in your home, who know you intimately and who know when you are not acting right or might be experiencing health problems.

Maybe these people are single because they're too unhealthy, stupid or lead too risky a lifestyle. Obesity isn't the only factor that should be ruled out.
