My ELO on chess.com is still trash, somewhere around 850, but I am definitely getting better every day.
It's daunting trying to master multiple openings. Right now for white I'm exploring Scotch Game, King's Gambit, and Ruy Lopez. Black all I have is Pirc and Old Sicilian and I get absolutely fucking dismantled. Chess pros help me, how do I get better playing black? ... Copied to Clipboard!

To play at a high level, you need to study and memorize lots of opening strategies.

Despite the fact that Chess is often claimed to be a brilliant game of strategy, a huge amount of it is just memorizing plays. Not to say there's isn't tactics or strategy, but the higher level you attain, the more you'll realize that memorization plays a significant role.
