I've never seen a Sonic game so beloved all around before

I'm not trying to be cynical or anything but I haven't seen anybody state their nitpicks with this one

the flaws of Sonic Mania are the flaws inherent to the Sonic games of that era. someone might take issue with some of the referential level design, but like, that's it?

yeah I guess you could say the reuse too many old stages

but they do it in a cool way where the first half of Act 1 is pretty much the same as the original zone, then the 2nd half of act 1 it starts to change it up, then Act 2 is typically a whole new take on that zone's gimmick

Almost all the new stages so far have been better than the old ones.

Water levels still suck. Chemical Plant and Hydrocity, no thanks. Good music isn't an excuse!

IMO it would've been cool if they did 2D versions of some well received zones from modern Sonic games, or remixed zones from stuff like the Game Gear games or Knuckles' Chaotix, but that wasn't really what they were going for. Maybe of there's a Mania 2.

Well, it's mostly how you unlock stuff, so it'd suck if it wasn't

The special stages aren't great, but they've never really been great.

It sucks that a lot of the unlockables can only be used on No-Save runs, too.

But the flaws with Sonic Mania are the flaws you'll find in just about every 2-D Sonic game. If that was never really your thing, you probably won't find this game to be the one that gets you hooked. If you like 2-D Sonic, then you'll like this.

I once spent an entire summer trying to finish Blue Sphere, all 132 million levels of it (I didn't know there were that many). So my affinity for it is perhaps greater than most!

I really like the new special stage actually. It's maybe my favourite after Blue Sphere. Trounces the others.
