In terms of overall gameplay and objectives, the original platforming genre has much more in common with bullet hell games than it does with a game like Mario 64 or Spyro.

You gotta play the hard ones. Ever played N+?

Super Meat Boy is sort of the only hard indie game like that I enjoyed.

Exactly, and Mario 64 and Spyro are sort of the original open world games.

Which is not the point of platformers. You just don't like platformers, which is okay. But pretending like the genre is aged is silly.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is the best game of last generation TBH

Totally disagree DKC games died with the SNES and GBA

You didn't play Tropical Freeze, obviously. The game puts those baby Mario platformers to shame, lmao

Every level in that game goes on and on and on for five hours. It is like a restaurant that doesn't know how to cook a good meal and compensates by giving you three more pounds of fries.

A lot of people didn't like it, it has a lot of issues that kept it from appealing to a wide audience.

I just happened to come across some super fanboy of the game who needed to rage at me for not loving the game with all his alts and everything. It's definitely one of those games like the New SMB games where people will hardcore defend it to death even though it lacks qualities that makes a classic.

That's a pretty great video. I never understood why Tropical Freeze resonates with me more than any other platformer, but I guess it's because of all the cool shit going on each level!

The guy makes a ton of great videos on game design. I don't always agree with him but most of the time they're really insightful. He's in the process of looking at dungeon design from every Zelda game and how they're approached. He's almost done (Breath of the Wild being the last one, he's thinking of waiting until the DLC dungeon is released) but it seems clear he's more of a fan of the maze-like ones where you have to explore and have choices on where to go, rather than the gauntlet-like ones that are essentially one path but have many puzzles to figure out.
