The last episode said something about the wall not being properly maintained for the past few hundred years? I don't know...

i think that just means that the wall has basically been more or less a penal colony for criminals/people with shitty social standings for the last few hundred years and not maintained seriously, but the magic is still there

If you actually want to know this is what the leaks say

*spoilers you dumb dumbs this could actually be true shit so don't read it if you don't want to be potentially spoiled for the remaining season*

apparently for whatever reason The night king turns one of dany's dragons into an undead dragon and uses it to burn down the wall (or part of it). Dragon fire itself is kinda magic so it counters the other magic

What about his ability to see Bran when he's watching? Clearly, the dude has some hidden magical abilities.

Is it known that the wall has magical properties? I can't seem to recall if that's something Jon or anyone at the wall has ever mentioned/acknowledged.

The king broke through the ravens cave barrier that the dead blew up at, and once he was through the dead could enter also.

Or maybe touching bran effected it, and now that bran is passed the wall he can go also.

benjen said it

yet he happily let bran go south of the wall, implying that bran is not gonna bring the wall down

yea i think it's stated a few times and I explicitly remember Benjen saying that he cannot get past the wall because he's undead

Well, there's the Horn of Winter (or the legend, anyway) in the books, so I suppose he could find that and use it.

I'm talking about anyone south of the Wall. Maybe Jon and the rest don't know it's actually a magic barrier.

leaked finale spoilers

basically, because Jon had to go north of the wall to get proof of the white walkers, it causes Dany to come with her dragons to save his ass, which causes one of them to die, which causes the nights king to bring it back to life and use its fire to melt the wall.

so basically if jon just left everything alone, the nights king probably would have been stuck on the other side of the wall since it was magic and shit.

to defend against wildlings. most of them thought the white walkers were just a myth to begin with. they'd go to the wall to avoid prison or something and then just chop trees and shit at castle black

The magic stops the Others, but the wildlings are still perfectly capable of just climbing over it

GRRM doesn't need to. A device called the Horn of Winter has been mentioned in the books, which is said to be able to bring the wall down. All he'd need to do is have the White Walker find it and use it. I don't know why the Showrunners never had it mentioned in the show.

Sam actually does find a horn along with the bag of dragonglass in the scene where they're digging a latrine pit at the fist of the first men. I doubt it's anything more than just an easter egg at this point, though.

Yeah, but the point is that everyone has forgotten the original reason the Watch was created. The Others hadn't been seen in 8,000 years, and so they've passed into vague legends and tall tales, while the Watch has become a glorified prison camp that believes it exists only to defend against wildlings.

there is a very strong case that the Horn of Winter can't really bring down the wall though, if it even actually exists. that was a bluff by Mance. his whole reason for wanting to get his people south is to get away from the Others. you really think he'd be willing to destroy the only bulwark that would stand between his people and the Others? the whole thing would be pointless if he did that.

Tormund admits in A Dance with Dragons that they never found the real horn, but seems convinced that one actually exists.

Again, it's irrelevant. The statement was there is nothing to indicate the night's king can breach the wall. The night's watch existence, irrelevant to what any of the characters currently believe, is the indication to us the viewers and readers that magic alone isn't enough.

so basically we are supposed to believe in the reality of the main threat of the entire show because of an assumption that since there are people on the wall, that they should be important?
