‘Arrow’ Star Stephen Amell Apologizes for Ahmed Mohamed Comment After Twitter Backlash
“Arrow” star Stephen Amell apologized Wednesday and said he will “go away for a bit” after generating backlash on social media for a comment he made on Ahmed Mohamed. The actor posted a video on Facebook Wednesday evening, saying that he “didn’t mean to offend anyone” after tweeting earlier in the day that, “Stereotyping Texas isn’t any better than stereotyping Ahmed. Just so we’re clear.” “Wasn’t trying to equate things that are very, very different,” he said in the video. “Was simply trying to say that two wrongs don’t make a right.” “The best thing to do in these scenarios is just go away for a little bit,” he went on. “So be well. I’ll be back. And that’s it.” Amell has also removed the profile pictures on his Twitter and Facebook accounts. 14-year-old Mohamed was arrested after bringing a self-made alarm clock into his school, MacArthur High School, in Irvine, Texas. One of his teachers mistook the device for a bomb and contacted authorities, who marched the student out of school in handcuffs and into juvenile detention. After his initial tweet, Amell attempted to explain himself in a series of posts throughout the day, saying, “What happened to Ahmed was terrible. Obviously.” “I happened to read a series of tweets pronouncing that this is a systemic problem in Texas, which is also profiling,” he wrote. “It’s profiling in a much less hurtful / destructive way… but it is profiling.
