What's the incentive when it's not like it's cheaper if at all significant?

Well on Steam you can pre-load the game ahead of time usually so that's pretty cool.

You get a discount from Amazon. And some games have pre order bonuses. I almost never get pre orders though.

So when it comes out, you already bought it and don't have to pay when it's out? It's like ordering food to pick up, you order before you get there so you don't have to wait or pay.

some games used to have limited runs, and the only real guarantee you'd have that you might be able to snag a copy would be if you pre-ordered it.

nowadays, you might get a bonus depending on where you pre-ordered, to help incentivize you to get it at a specific store.

The main reason would be for limited edition merc or bonuses that pre-orders will often include as an incentive to pre-order.

There's not really a supply problem when online stores exist that allow you to download the game which was one of the reasons pre-ordering became popular to ensure you got a physical copy of the game on release. But with games going on sale much more frequently and much quicker after release, there's not a whole lot of reasons to pre-order anymore.

EDIT: Also i remember going to a few midnight releases for some games I pre-ordered years ago. Not sure if that is still around, but if you want to go a midnight release pre-ordering is the best way to ensure you get out quickly.
