Continuity in Mario is a bad idea because it requires a more complex story than "princess got kidnapped again."

The Super Mario Bros. games, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island fit one nice little line of continuity without having a greater story than rescuing royalty or family. The thing about continuity is that it opens up the door for disastrous turns in a series that is primarily driven by gameplay.
