basically, you play a Celtic woman, named Senua, who journeys to Hel to bargain for her lover to be brought back to life.

she throughout, you hear these voices, and see these hallucinations, since Senua apparently suffers from psychosis.

there's no HUD or tutorials. instead, the aforementioned voices help guide you (even though the game is pretty linear), and there are these stones with runes on them that you can focus on that will give you some lore.

Well, that makes sense. Still comes off as a bit of research failure from your description. Or at the very least, like they were really attached the name "Hellblade" and didn't want to change it to something unwieldy like "Otherworldblade" or something like that.

Still, the Germanic afterlife is pretty routinely misrepresented. It basically boils down to "Valhalla or Hel", where as the former is paradise for blood thirsty warriors and the latter is Christian Hell with more pointy helmets. In reality, we don't know a lot about their beliefs outside of what was written in Iceland post-Conversion.

What we do know suggest that Valhalla was only one possible afterlife, since his wife got to claim half the warriors who died in battle, suggesting that people could end up in different god's halls. Hel, is also often misconstrued as some profound place of bleak suffering, when in reality it was probably believed to be more like life 2.0. On top of that, it was also the name of the psychopomp daughter of Loki who was 'half black and half white' and that's about all we know.

But that's just my rambling tangent.

Senua gets hit with some kinda corruption, that spreads each time she dies. once it reaches her head, it's game over.

I'm 3 hours in and its a lot of fun! Loving the atmosphere, and I've had some intense moments where I literally would not have survived without the help of the voices. I'm curious if that will change as the game attempts to break you.

I haven't played since last night, but it looks like it's getting a mostly good reception.

hopefully it'll be successful, and more "AAA indie" titles will come out

Totally makes sense. Sorry if my post came off aggressive. I just get excited anytime ancient mythologies come up on the boards!

it's all good.

I also glossed over some stuff, so maybe the game handled the mythology more than I key on.
