I mean sure he won, but he died right afterwards, while the steam engine will continue to work for years to come presumably, thus being much more efficient.

Seems kinda dumb, ya know?

I like to see it from a positive point of view. Mankind/human's willpower, endurance, and stubbornness against a hopeless cause. Though it could also be seen as human's nature against certain changes. I'd imagine a modern time folktale would be a robot doing the work of several humans at a much faster and efficient rate.
