Nazism lasted a lot less, ten years compared to 80 for Marxist-Leninist USSR. And even then, this was only true during Stalin's tenure. Capitalism, for example, kills many more than fascism and socialism together every five years.

I would argue it's immoral to do nothing confronted with someone spouting hate rhetoric. Words can be as meaningul as actions. If the Muslim is preaching hate at that moment, completely fair to stop him from doing so.

I don't think it's meant to be convenient. It's just the nature of a lot of modern movements. Since most of them begin on social media, they're created via an unguided amalgamation of loosely related opinions from a wide variety of people with various beliefs and motivations. They're created without any leader figures because they were born from a bunch of people giving their opinions equally on social forums, and the volume creates disunity in the movement but for the most basic of shared beliefs between those associated.

But yes, during the 1920s, the NSDAP grew because thousands were moved by Hitler's hateful rethoric — even though it lacked substance, his emotional and passionate speech and written word mobilized those thousands who then became millions, his hateful beliefs were normalized, so soon it was normal to believe the Jews were behind all of Germany's woes, and before long, the NSDAP won the elections and then Hitler promptly dismantled democracy and instituted a totalitarian corporatocratic state.

If hate speech laws existed back then, Mein Kampf would have never been published and Hitler would have been promptly arrested with his movement dissassembled. No WW2, no Holocaust, no Cold War.
