Appalling to hear a joke country doing stuff like this. But I'm pretty sure America has secret anti-missile technology hidden away until they need to use it. If America is all about protecting its interests, missile defence is definitely something it has up its sleeve.

This thought process is dangerous and ignorant. People need to stop ignoring and mocking North Koreas nuclear ability. They are very close to being a nuclear super power and the amount of progress they've made just in the past six months is staggering.

We don't want them to have the ability to threaten the mainland United states. They've gone from barely being able to launch a missile to missiles that definitely can reach the west coast (and theoretically the east coast) in a year

No, they don't. We have an extremely public (And expensive) anti-missile defense system (THAAD) and it is not reliable enough to ensure even a single launch can be stopped. As it turns out, stopping an outer-atmosphere projective going several times the speed of sound is extremely difficult.

I think that Kim Jong Un and the government of North Korea are crazy, crazy men. They're horrible men that mistreat millions. But they are not suicidal. Anything that even resembled a serious attack on the United States, or any of the other major countries surrounding the area, and their country becomes an absolute crater. The only reason that they're still around for now is because no one wants to deal with what would be a massive humanitarian crisis once NK refugees start pouring in at the Chinese and South Korean borders. Any legitimate bombing or attack on America, one of its allies, or China, and they have no friends. They will be wiped off the face of the earth.

Lots of countries can reach us, NK wouldn't be the first. There are systems in place that make us hard to hit if a country did launch one our way.

The thing keeping the world safe is MAD. Most countries with nuclear capabilities don't want to end the world and have some form of checks and balances in place to keep one person from deciding that it's time.

North Korea on the other hand, is the only country with nuclear capability that has no checks and balances. I don't think Un is going to think twice about launching a nuke. If he feels his regime is threatened he will fire and no one will stop him.

uhhh, we have anti-missile technology right out in the open. THAAD in South Korea was implemented for just this reason.

We probably have some super secret experimental shit too, but what we have now in public is pretty damn good.

if this is also a hwasong-14, it was undoubtedly launched with no payload whatsoever

a two stage modified hydrazine motor just isnt going to get the total impulse required to deliver any kind of payload to that altitude

i continue to be doubtful of the released analyses claiming it reached the altitude that is claimed, however.

and even if it performs as claimed, ICBM accuracy is an entirely separate and entirely unproven effort that they'll have to solve separately. reaching a city and hitting a city are very different things.

what i will note is that the only interceptor that would be able to target this missile would be the GMD

They claim to have mobile launchers capable of launching their ICBMs, something which is dubious but possible. If they do have mobile launchers, they would be able to deploy and launch the missiles before we could practically find and neutralize them.

As far as I know they have no stationary nuclear-armed silos, but we would know if/when they build them. Still, the chances of interception would be low since a modern nuclear missile can launch in a matter of minutes. So, in order to deploy a working ICBM they would need to still:

1.Successfully integrate a nuclear payload to a suitable missile (If this most recent launch was properly weighted for a payload, the rocketry is technically sufficient). This requires extremely complex electronics for guidance, timing, and detonation.

2. Successfully create a navigable rocket that can find and reach its target accurately. This is especially difficult without quality GPS satellites.

3. Design a means to stealthily deploy the weapon without the U.S. being able to neutralize it on the launch pad. (A mobile launcher would technically meet this requirement).

IF THEY DID launch a missile, it would have to successfully bypass our GMD systems. The GMD had been tested against near-peer missile simulations and had about a 50% success. That would be only for continental U.S. targets though. Overall, the success rate for NK would be low for one ICBM launched, but could be more substantial if they manage to produce a few dozen. Still, marrying a warhead to a missile won't happen until 2018 at the earliest.

Nah, that's not how observation satellites work. Analysts review a large sum of hd photos taken, usually once a day except over hotbed areas, to observe construction progress of static military structures, the movement and deployment of military units, the operating base of static artillery embankments for changes, the movement of supply lines, the location of air and naval bases, and testing grounds for experimental weapons. It's simply not practical to 1. Send a video feed of such a large area for a long period of time, 2. Launch enough observation satellites to monitor the entire area day and night, 3. Train and employ enough analysts to comb through all the footage.
