Someone told me about quaterions today, and it looks so damn wrong.

Ijk should be -sqrt(-1).

Just checked Wikipedia and saw the multiplication table.

ij = k
jk = i

ki = j;

ijk = k*k = -1.

But if k = ij, i^2 = i^2 j^2

j^2 = 1, and you can do that for all of them to say i^2 = 1, k^2 = 1.

So j, i, and k can equal either 1 or -1

Meaning if i = 1, j = 1, and k = -1

ijk = -1

Quaternions are used to describe vector orientation. Your mistake is you need to use vector multiplication for the identity i^2=j^2= k^2=ijk=-1, it isn't regular algebraic multiplication. i*j does not equal j*i for example. Need to use the right hand rule and that jazz

I was noticed this,quaternions being vector notation, as I was looking at the multiplication table and was about to ask what all TC was told by his friend now that I remember glossing over this while figuring out (and still figuring out) how to work on my raytracer.

It's kinda like complex numbers, but with 4 dimensions instead of two. To make it work, the commutative property of multiplication is given up. For octonions, another basic property is given up, etc.
