i wonder which party champions policies that strip people of their purchasing power through inflation

tbqh it's probably all the parties, since big government favors the powerful regardless of which political leaning you're on

pretty stable considering the economic crash we went through. Inflation hasn't really been an issue since the late 80s/early 90s

There was a brief time when cheese manufacturers (kraft et al) started selling their cheese product in 7 oz containers (rather than raise the price) to the chagrin of most consumers who use it for recipes made with an 8 oz portion in mind.

So then they went back to 8 oz, and the price raised accordingly, and people were a little miffed but not as much as they were about the size down. It's pretty clever bait and switch.

inflation rates over the last ten years are worrisome. it might look like just 1 or 2 percent per year that you're looking at, but over the long run what is the result?

I know there was a milk shortage in the US a couple years ago and all the milk suppliers bumped their prices up..the thing is, when supply goes back to normal they don't drop the prices back down, they keep them where they are. So the prices eventually just keep going up and up

This is the way. A lot of that ALDI brand stuff actually tastes better than name brand in my opinion. Cereals and Snacks especially.

These all seem like commodity products with plenty of alternatives. For most of these, you can buy the generic brands and get larger quantity for less money. It's only the large brands that are charging for a premium product.

There is nothing stopping new entrants from coming into the consumer staples markets. They don't do that because the profit margins are garbage. How much money are you going to make selling toilet paper for 15 cents less than the competitors?

besides tax conditions that favor entrenched monopolies and old timers rather than fresh blood and the little guy? besides corporations buying out competitors or using their massive weight to cheat rather than compete?

What tax considerations for toilet paper, orange juice, and candy bars are you referring to?

And "burying the competition" in this case is economies of scale. That is an element of the free market.
