Never, AFAIK. If they ever announced it was not going to be a real shark, they didn't do a good job of making that information readily available.

I don't know what anyone could have possibly expected, you'd have to be pretty fucking slow to imagine he'd get in a pool with a real shark and try to out swim in.

Not only is it a dumb ass match up, it's one solved by simply recording basic speeds from sharks. Almost any marine animal is going to trounce a human swimmer. MP is good . . . for a flipping human but he's not a god damn fish. This was a stupid gimmick, and anyone that was excited or gave 2 shits simply got conned.

Nobody expected him to literally swim right next to a shark. We expected that there would be some metal bars of some kind separating the two, or even in just two different tanks.

I suspect the real reason they didn't have him race a real shark is because the real shark would beat him by much, much faster than 2 seconds.

Like ChromaticAngel said, no one actually thought he'd be in the same area as the shark, they could be separated or in completely different pools.

I thought, because it would be hard to get a shark to swim in a straight line on command, they would film a shark in a pool and wait for it to naturally go in a straighish line, or maybe bait it with food to get it to go faster. Then they'd have Phelps do that distance and just superimpose them next to each other for the "race".

But I agree that this whole thing was a stupid idea in the first place. But I also think shark week is one of the most boring things on TV, so I'm a little more biased.

I knew he would never race a real shark but is it too much to ask that he cover himself in chum, jump into the water and then be given a 10 second head start before they released the shark?

part of me wonders if they came up with the idea to use a real shark + chum first and then lawyers told them no because of animal rights groups.
