I figure, if I start paying that'll help convince me to go 3-4 times a week, ya know?

it won't. start at home. get some weights, go for a run....get yourself motivated and into a routine. then when you're ready to take the next step consider a gym membership...

i started with a basic set from Wal Mart...it was just 2 40 LB dumbells with a few plates....added plates to my routine over time and eventually bought a bar and a few more plates when i was ready...then progressed to the Gym.

Gyms love people who think like that, because most of them end up paying for a year and then quitting shortly after starting. The gym ends up with a nice profit without more people cluttering it up.

"If I pay for it, it'll force me to go" doesn't work because you'd still have to exert willpower to go even if you've already paid money. So why not just rely on willpower from the start?
