I'm showing movies to my students tomorrow and figured I'd add Thai subtitles so that they could actually read and follow along but they are just weird characters or little squares. I've changed so many settings but it just won't work. I managed to get them working with VLC on my phone but won't on my laptop.

What font though? It's set by default to Arial but not sure what it should be.

Perhaps you don't have the necessary fonts on your computer?

VLC has it set to Arial by default, set it to something else that has Unicode support like Arial Unicode MS
Tools -> Preferences -> Subtitles / OSD -> Subtitle Effects Font --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Currently Thai (WIndows-874). I've tried the other Thai one, default and universal.

Tried changing the font. Used Arial Unicode MS, even downloaded a Thai font and tried that but still just squares.
