It's always been a sore point of history because Dunkirk was such a staple of British honor, pride and history but the fact has always been that if Germany wanted to they could have just piled it on and crushed them. However at the time the Nazis were still hoping for a peace treaty with the UK and didn't want to spoil their chances. So when the British were helpless and cornered the Nazis just stopped advancing and let them go.
