It seems in retrospect people only have bad things to say about it in comparison to Echoes and Awakening and it makes me kinda sad, since I see it as nothing but an improvement to Awakening.

People bitch about Corrin being too Marty Stu/Mary Sue and how they shouldn't have been the protagonist AND the Lord in the game, even though that has happened a bunch of times already in the series and as recently as Echoes. The Dragon things aren't explained well but also have neat origins

Conquest/Birthright are criticized for being too easy/hard when that's exactly the point of each. Plus there's always tweakable difficulty levels. Haven't played Revelations yet but I heard it's somewhere in between

The story isn't too great but that's par for the course, dunno why this one in particular gets lit up for it.

Honestly I feel like Fates is the best balance of all the 3DS Fire Emblems, even though Awakening is what got me to buy a 3DS in the first place. I got Echoes for free but haven't played it yet so maybe I'll end up liking it just as much too
