In a Wednesday essay titled "Was That Racist," reporter Greg Howard singled out white women for forcing him "off the sidewalk completely" when walking toward him, not allowing a straight path.

"In seven years of living and walking here, I’ve found that most people walk courteously — but that white women, at least when I’m in their path, do not," Howard writes.

"Sometimes they’re buried in their phones. Other times, they’re in pairs and groups, and in conversation. But often, they’re looking ahead, through me, if not quite at me," he continues.

"When white women are in my path, they almost always continue straight, forcing me to one side without changing their course. This happens several times a day; and a couple of times a week, white women force me off the sidewalk completely. In these instances, when I’m standing in the street or in the dirt as a white woman strides past, broad-shouldered and blissful, I turn furious," Howard said.

"After these encounters, I’m always left with questions. Why only and specifically white women? Do they refuse to acknowledge me because they’ve been taught that they should fear black men, and that any acknowledgment of black men can invite danger? Do they refuse to acknowledge me because to alter their route would be to show their fear? Do they not see me? Can they not see me?" he asks later in the essay.

Finally someone had the courage to speak up about this. I live in NY and just came from Wall St. an hour ago...this has gone on long enough. I have suffered through this as a black man every day for ten years, even my own fiance is guilty of this malicious behavior when we go shopping.

Sometimes women will not walk out of your way because they want to brush up against you because they think you're attractive.

You ever considered that? Or are you too busy drowning in your racist narrative?

Is it racist, or are they just assholes? I see many many idiots that bunch up and walk together in Chicago. Blocking the entire sidewalk, and refusing to move. I hate those people, and I will walk right through them. Worse are the idiots who meet someone and decide to hug it out and talk right in the middle of the sidewalk instead of moving to the side.

When he says "force," I get the feeling they aren't literally pushing him off of the sidewalk but rather he is choosing to do the courteous thing and step aside to let someone pass. I do the same thing, and I've always perceived it as a male courtesy thing along the lines of holding a door or giving up your seat.

I wonder if he's ever considered simply not moving out of the way? What does he think will happen?

He's a man, he's supposed to act like one and be a gentleman, instead he's being a whiny bitch and writing an article about his own complete lack of class and etiquette. A man should always move to the side to let a woman pass, just like he should always walk on the side of a walkway closest to the street when walking with a lady.

As a gentleman, I will follow sidewalk etiquette. Which is keep to the right and not block the sidewalk. If I am all the way to the right, and you wont move out of the way, I am walking through. Man or woman.

Also two white women in their early 20's cornered me and began asking me directions to a place that i don't know how to get to. Instead of letting me on my way they then asked if there was a place nearby with free wifi, and then they broke the most sacred boundary and asked me if i worked nearby(on account of my clothes). These types of microaggressions really add up over the years, you have no idea.

Honestly normal manners is to look ahead and both parties make effort to get out of each others way. When one partys like "fuck this dude im not moving" we have this weird game of chicken. I move but still think the persons a jerk.
