A U.S. House panel on Wednesday approved a sweeping proposal by voice vote to allow automakers to deploy up to 100,000 self-driving vehicles without meeting existing auto safety standards and bar states from imposing driverless car rules.

This is fantastic news! Autonomous vehicles are so close.

Lol it will be at least 10 years before that actually happens. especially because for a long time they will still require a human in the truck for unusual situations, breakdowns, etc.

According to the article the current "driverless" car standards still assume that there is a driver who is paying attention to the road in case the system fails, which is a very bad assumption to make.

Even if the person sitting at the wheel is trying to pay attention the extra time it would take to recognize a problem with auto pilot makes it unlikely for the "driver" to have time to correct the mistake before a crash happens.

This is exactly what I mean when I say that automation can provide everyone with a universal basic income. The machines do all the work, and we all get to benefit from lower costs and a universal income.

Not really, because automation can increase profits and also reduce costs at the same time. Just like we've seen throughout history. Business owners will always need customers.

Also competition, if one business is making a ton of profit, another could undercut them. This is especially true with commodity based industries like mining. What I mean by that is that it's something where it doesn't really matter who you buy it from. Iron ore or whatever of the same grade is going to be the same regardless. So people just go with the cheapest price. This is different from a product like a smartphone where it's actually differentiated from company to company.

and a banking system, they're going to need that... oh and they'll probably end up getting sanctioned by every other country and having their assets frozen. So they won't be able to do anything but sit on their island or whatever without being able to import anything. The hookers will probably leave soon and then they'll just have a deck of cards to play blackjack with and eat the local bananas.

oh I agree, I just think the idea that automation will all be controlled by some evil super rich corporation is silly because competition will force the benefits to be passed to consumers.
