And which ones do you try to avoid actively?

Of course, if luck pushes you to a certain color you'll go for it. But which groups are the ones you generally favor?

Of course, if luck pushes you to a certain color you'll go for it.

Also if the opponents appear to themselves be overvaluing or undervaluing a colour -- taking advantage of their misappraisals can be very profitable.

But if all else is equal, myself I'd lean toward trying for the light blues, light purples, or oranges in a 2-player game;
these three plus the reds in a 3-player game;
the oranges and reds in a 4-player game; and
the oranges, reds, yellows, or dark blues with 5 players or more.

Please note that the oranges are always great to have and develop. (Unless the opponents feel the same way and have ended up vastly overvaluing them, of course.) Same goes for the railroads.

On the other hand, the greens are just too expensive to deal with and the money can be better used elsewhere. (Again, unless the opponents are willing to let you have them for a song.)
Meanwhile the dark purples are negligibly tiny, even for 2 players. (Baltic isn't that bad, but Mediterranean is ridiculous, and you can't develop one without the other.)

The more players, the more total money in play, and the more chance that somebody is going to land on your high-priced group, so your big-money gamble there will pay off.

With only 2 players -- and provided that you don't use unofficial house rules such as putting taxes, fines, and property purchase prices, under "Free Parking" --
there just isn't enough total money in play for the reds and yellows and blues to be viable enough to compete with the cheaper-to-develop colours. They're still viable in and of themselves of course, they're just outpaced by the latter.

Just my thoughts on the matter. ^.^
And probably wrong. ;.;

For some reason, I swear anyone I've ever played monopoly with have always bought the orange properties. And by bought I mean they prefer them and basically have to have them.

(I usually buy 1 or 2 of them if I can just so I can trade them for yellow or green properties XD)

2 players isn't that fun. There's too high a chance that one player will get a natural monopoly, and the other player won't, and unless it was the dark purples, it's an auto win for the player with the natural monopoly, who has no real incentive to trade. You need at least 3 players to avoid that kind of situation.

Doesn't matter what colours you go for. The way to win is to just get groups and to start building houses on them. As many houses as you can. Never upgrade to hotels. This makes it so that eventually, no one else can build houses, which also means they can't build hotels. It turns you into an actual monopoly and makes it literally impossible for the others to win. They just have to sit there and slowly suffer as they get chipped down.

You want green. That's a money pit for everyone else if you develop it out.

I gotta agree with this. There needs to be a specialized 2-player monopoly mode.
