At first I thought saying the instruction manual was sometimes better than the game was a stretch, but I can think of two LJN produced games for which that was absolutely the truth.

Manuals were for the rides to/from school and served little purpose when actually playing the games.

Eh, they were novelty pieces. Today, a lot of games have voice acting and in-depth characters. Back in the day, it was a treat to get even a hint of what a character's canon personality was like or to get any insight into their motivations.
