In other news, a muslim extremist got in a truck and killed more people with it than are killed in the average mass shooting.

a truck is needed for transportation of goods and people. Tell me what is a gun needed for than to kill people? Self-defense? Yep, just killing people.

In other words, you don't actually care that the instrument of mass death was a vehicle. Nope, gotta get dem guns.

and what do you suggest? Banning all vehiclces on the road? Does that sound sensible?

Now turn the question around for guns. Banning all guns from civilians? Does that sound sensible? Yes, yes, it does.

Why does that sound sensible to you?

Oh, I don't know. Maybe because USA is one of, if not, the only developed country in the world where you can literally just buy a gun off the streets? If that sounds sensible to an American, it is indeed sensible, only to the country that elected Trump into office.

No you're not getting to the root of your opinion. What makes it a no-brainer to you that guns should not be available to people?

You can't do that legally. All legal purchases of firearms require background checks.

I said obtain a gun in any way. oh this guy sure did it just fine.

let's make this simple. Just answer me. WHAT do you even need a gun for as a civilian?

For hunting? You don't use guns like pistols for hunting.
For self-defense? You gonna carry your pistol everywhere with you?

really, do say.

see, that's funny considering the instances of people actually managing to defend themselves with a gun is completely outweighed by the sheer number of instances of people killing themselves and others with guns.

For one thing, it's not always about need. Gun enthusiasm is a great hobby, and more legal restrictions would hurt these people far more than it would violent criminals for no reason. Guns are everywhere in the US. Nothing is going to make them go away, and it's a fact of life that the more understanding and grounded lawmakers acknowledge when writing policy.

Also yes, there are people who do carry their pistol everywhere.

I also carry my pistol with me when I hunt because I hunt in dangerous areas where cougars can sneak up on you real fast and a rifle isn't best for close range.

except the gun restrictions proposed by Dems before has nothing to do with affecting people like you. It has nothing to do with banning guns. It just tightens regulations and would only affect criminals and those others likely to commit a crime with it, especially the mentally ill.

It's amusing how gun-rights supporters are protesting against a law that does NOT even affect them.

the whole point of my topic was about gun laws in the country, not whether everyone suddenly shouldn't have guns. And the law proposed I was referring to was the one Obama handed down the last time which only aimed to curb gun accessibility to some very specific groups of people.

None of whom 99% of gun-supporters would even be affected AT ALL.

It needlessly tightens regulations on people who abide by said laws. No, it would not affect criminals.

Restricting firearms from the mentally ill is pretty fucked up too because of the side effects of such a proposal. Having to see a psychologist before being allowed to purchase a gun is insane, and if not that, not being allowed to own a gun just because you had something like clinical depression at one point is ridiculous and an infringement upon rights. PLUS, I am extremely uncomfortable with the government having legal records of people's mental illnesses and then restricting their freedoms just because they sought out psychotherapy and tried to better themselves.

That whole thing is completely fucked.

How about we work to improve the mental health of our nation instead?

I'm a rational person, speak to me, what do you propose America does? I'm all for mental health screenings, we already have to do a background check in most states to buy a gun, I know I did for all my handguns(Michigan/Arizona). I know gun shows are a way to skip around those but I agree, we should have background checks at those shows too.

And don't give me links, I want your ideas on how to handle this, not links to other people's ideas.

People with documented mental illness usually can't pass the background check. Therefore, they didn't legally buy the gun and the store who sold it to them is responsible for wrongful death.

What makes you think he even needs a reason, let alone one that satisfies you? Why do most people need a car, when there is public transportation or you can use your feet? Why do you need two cheeseburgers, when one will fill you up? Why do you need a fancy smart phone, when a cheap one still makes calls and texts? None of those items are rights, but having a firearm is. Stop trying to control people by telling them what they are not allowed to have. It makes you sound like a dictator, as in the exact kind of person who would try to take away people's firearms.

and what exactly would it change? at this point its impossible to instigate any type of weapons ban or even certain forms of gun control. theres just too many guns in circulation and its too easy for anyone to get them if they were banned. you can make them in your garage with a little knowledge and they can easily be brought up through mexico. not to mention somehow magically getting rid of the 300million already in the US and taking them away from 100+ million owners, some of which WOULD fight back in trying to do so.

the best thing you could do is put tighter restrictions on firearm abuse. harsher penalties for firearm crime and more accountability for police. make safety courses mandatory before buying, put tighter background checks on certain types of weapons, put a bigger emphasis on mental health checkups and heavily crack down on 12-18 very specific cities. this would drastically cut down on firearm violence and crime without drastically harming civilians rights.

guns also mean much more to the US than any other country. theyve been a part of our history since the beginning and are as much of a symbol than anything. while it might seem insane to many they represent freedom of which getting rid of part of that would cut off a hand (or atleast a few fingers) of this countrys ideals and foundation.

as far as the question at hand. yes iv had 2 friends who died to gang violence (i live very near to flint and detroit) and an uncle. no i wouldn't go full bore into a gun ban (tho honestly i would change a few things if i had my way). i dont blame the tool, i blame the person wielding it and theres more ways to deal with that than just getting rid of the item. if someone wants to harm others there going to find a way to do it. you have to stop the problem at the root.
