I've been hearing about Tor for a while but never bothered to try it out. Does it really allow for anonymous browsing? Is it functionally sufficient primary Internet usage?

For the most part, it is. It's slower than a conventional browser though because it's going through proxies, I guess. I would only use it to get around region locks.

Anyway, yeah it's not worth it for actual browsing. It's way too slow. Think slower than dial up at 56k slow.

there is a pretty good chance you'll do something online that will give you away even if you use Tor.

You'd most likely have to use some sort of random generator for everything related to identity: random place you're from, random name, password, etc. For each account or site you use.
And even then, human habits make it so it's possible to track you.
