Ever since the N64, a lot of third parties gave Nintendo the cold shoulder and would decide to release their games on Sony and Microsoft systems. Why was it like that?

Back then cds were alot cheaper and could hold more memory than cartridge based games so many companies shifted their focus away from Nintendo.

Now especially Sony and Microsoft consoles are similar in specs, both significantly more powerful than Nintendo and have larger install bases

FFX is the best game of all time. The only good Nintendo franchises are Pokemon and Fire Emblem. Comics are for kids. https://i.imgur.com/LJ3WSyB.gif

Since then Nintendo has focused on a variety of gimmicks, some good and some bad, and thus some companies continue to support them in different ways depending on the console or handheld in question.

They started using discs with the Gamecube but went with a smaller format to reduce piracy. The Wii gave us motion controls which the others tried to copy seeing Nintendo's success.

The Wii U was a failed attempt to extend what they already had going while developing something new (see the Sega CD and 32X as examples for comparison)

and now we have the Switch.
