Until they want to upgrade or get a new stadium. Then the city and/or state taxes pay for it since the owners won't shell out for it themselves, only threaten to move the team if they say no.

Still has nothing to do with player contracts

the sports fan in me thinks it sucks, but the video game fan in me is loving all the great content im getting

this was also in particular a year that really highlighted lack of parity in sports. funny how tolerable that is in e-sports, i guess its way less of an investment

Sports to video games is kind of a logical move, actually. The problem is playing sports is far healthier, watching either though is basically same same.

Much of this has to do with millennials being cord cutters

No I think this is all it amounts to.

If people could watch sports on Netflix, they probably would.

Don't know if this is right, but this is exactly what my first thought was.

If I could pay a subscription to my preferred sports channel ala Netflix for 10 bucks a month, I would in a heartbeat.

As it is, they charge 25 a month, and that just isn't worth it when I can find ways to watch them without that fee at all.

Hopefully this leads to the end of players getting multi million dollar contracts (won't happen any time soon, but would be a beautiful thing if it eventually happens)

Why does that bother you so much? Its not like the contracts are government sanctioned or anything. It's the owners money.

Until they want to upgrade or get a new stadium. Then the city and/or state taxes pay for it since the owners won't shell out for it themselves, only threaten to move the team if they say no.

This has an infamous example in Canada. Montreal I believe, they went heavily into debt for a stadium that is derided by it's own citizens as a piece of garbage that took forever to built and was basically falling apart since before they even opened it.

As for me personally, I just never gave a crap about sports, nor do I even care about e-sports. As for the money thing, it's the idea that not only are sports boring, but the amount of money that the players make is often enough to be disgusting. Then when you double down on the fact that these players are often corrupted by that money and get involved in scandals or do dumb garbage wasting more money than you'll ever see in your life, it turns apathy and annoyance into actual resentment.

I mean, could you imagine just all the money that gets dumped down the sports hole actually pumped back into the economy for something useful?

Dude, are you people serious right now? I've worked in an office-job environment the past 5 years of my life. Wanna know how many people discuss League of Legends or DOTA 2? 0. Want to know how many people discuss Sunday Night Football? A lot.

This is bull****.

they are but not in the "oh no the league is going to fold!" sense...they are losing ratings in some cases and have been looking for ways to bring in new fans and increase ratings while also competing in todays market and climate....that is technically considered a "struggle"....Pro sports aren't going away anytime soon.

millenials don't like COMMERCIALS

i don't either, but i still watch sports. for certain games i just DVR and watch later, skipping commercials. if it's a game i really care about, i watch it live but mute the commercials. commercials are the worst.

The NBA is actually waking up to this as well. Fewer breaks are expected this year. They'll just increase partner branding and will be putting logos on jerseys. Sure it might be ugly but it won't affect the game and fewer breaks will keep people tuned in.

Yeah, soccer teams have been doing this for a while.

Pro-sports are doing great in large part to the massive TV deals that were given out before the cord cutting started.

why stay loyal to sports franchises that don't stay loyal to it's fanbase? from corrupt officiating all the way to the cable/satellite contracts that screw over those who traditionally watched on local TV.

plus there are many more ways to spend your time at home compared to 30 years ago.

Jockbros from the 70s, 80s and 90s and sport fanatic parents are to blame. They caused a whole generation of geek nerd kids to not even care about sports anymore.

Imagine the poor dudebro sad that no one cares about football could have been prevented if he had been nicer to all the kids that might have actually joined and played football in school if they weren't getting stuffed in lockers.
