I don't think I have ever had a man get angry at the usage of sir but I have had a few people get angry because I used ma'am or miss. So I have mostly given up on trying to use any honorifics for women.

That sort of applies to me yeah. There seems to be stigma around ma'am that doesn't apply to sir.
