Typical Texas thunderstorm. I was playing Diablo II. The power went out. That was the last time that computer played anything.

One time I lost cable and internet for two weeks because a lightning surge fried the cable box and the modem, and Comcast was slow as hell in sending someone out to replace them.

Not yet, but I live in southwest Florida now and I'm pretty fucking sure Zeus and Thor vacation here in the summer, so it's pretty much inevitable that something's gonna get fried one day.

No, I haven't. The closest I've been to being hit or effected by lightning is when it hits my pool, or that one time the wind blew my umbrella away and before I could catch it, lightning hit it. I gave up on getting it back after that.

I was more than 15 feet away and I swear I could still feel the shock.

I've had speakers that just never worked the same after a lightning strike. would just constantly output this really low base sound. As time went on, it got worse to the point where I'd have to unplug the speakers just to go to sleep, and then eventually they had to be replaced altogether.

Now that I know more about speaker hardware, I probably could have just replaced the amp and saved myself a ton of money. Most likely the amp was the only thing that broke and the speakers were probably still good.

Yeah, I was 14 and wasn't sure if as soon as I touched it, it would fry me or not. From what I could see though I don't think it was damage too bad.

I've had a lightning strike take out my cable modem and my computer's Ethernet jack. The Ethernet adapter just vanished from its hardware list. The computer ran fine, though I eventually replaced the motherboard. I'm pretty sure the strike actually went through the cable jack.

Should have been ok in that regard, but I was talking more about how that "lightning never strikes the same place twice" assumption is bull, especially when said place is a metal pole sticking into the air.

Nope.

the fear of it happening made me take precautions though such as surge protectors for my better electronics stuff.

Even had battery backup too. That thing works in the rare blackouts i get.

No, because you're supposed to turn that shit off during a thunderstorm and either switch to a handheld, battery powered device or just read a book.

FYI, I've seen lightning ruin everything at one point or another, whether it had a surge protector, fuse, breaker, GFCI, or UPS / Auto Transfer.

Do not underestimate the damage a direct lightning strike to a building or power line can cause. Get a lightning rod for your house if you don't already have one.

I've even seen electronics get destroyed that were fucking -off- when the lightning hit.

A ps3 got fried on a power strip in college. I thought it was a surge protector, since I only ever bought them but this was a roommates.

gain favor with the gods to prevent this from happening, the only advice i can give. though there's this one incident with the big screen TV that didn't work no more after a power outage (power company's fault in which they denied they did it). no compensation to be had.

once someone's mylar balloons managed to knock off power for nearly the whole day on the 4th of july it wrecked into many business profits. people smashed watermelons at the safeway because they wouldn't sell food to visitors or the locals till the power went back on.

Back in like, 91' or so, my house' nintendo got hit by lightning. The system still worked fine, but the controller in port 2 got fried.

Around 2004, my older brother's xbox got hit by lightning. It did not survive.

Both times our house got hit, it was one of those overnight lightning storms where you just kinda' sleep through it.
